Altars

Supplies: photos of your friends and family, objects that have a special meaning to you, pictures of angels, saints, Jesus, Buddha, or Brahman, real or silk flowers and leaves, crystals, small animal figures

People all throughout history have used altars and shrines. Altars can be used for any reason you choose. Some examples of things they can be used for are:

  • what you want to happen

  • wishing someone get well

  • to honor someone who has died

  • to honor your faith (beliefs)

  • to develop a talent

  • to bring love or peace into your life

Writing about altars would fill a whole book, so it might be easier to just show you pictures of examples:

As you can see, you can make an altar for just about anything. There are animals, plants, flowers, scents, saints, angels, stones, symbols, shapes, planets and religious deities (gods) for everything you could possibly want. More important than what you place on your altar, is how your altar feels to you.

When setting up your altar, make sure all your objects are clean. Your room should be quiet, or just have peaceful music playing. Concentrate on what you hope will happen and ask God, or your divine spirit, to bring the results you want. Keep your altar clean.

There is more to altars than I can write about here. If you are interested in learning more, here are a couple of good books: Altars by Denise Linn is especially good, or Sacred Spaces by Josephine de Winter.
